What Are Roof Lanterns?
There are a few terms used to describe similar products. For example, rooflights and skylights are used interchangeably and describe the same thing. American customers often refer to flat glazing systems for flat or pitched roofs as skylights, whereas they are known as rooflights in the UK. Roof lanterns, however, are slightly different.
Similarly, they describe a glazed structure that aims to boost natural light. Roof lanterns are slightly different in that they protrude from the roof and are mainly rectangular or pyramid shaped. The price will vary depending on size and materials, and on average, roof lanterns tend to cost slightly more than rooflights.
Inspired by the Victorian era, roof lanterns allow more natural light and better thermal insulation in cold and dark properties. Anyone looking for an aesthetically-pleasing feature for their build that increases productivity will benefit from roof lanterns.
Do Roof Lanterns Require Planning Permission?
Planning permission is not required providing the roof lantern does not exceed the tallest part of your roof. It must remain within 150mm of the existing roof. If you are installing a roof lantern onto your single-storey roof of a two-storey building, you will likely stay within these limits.
If you are worried, you can obtain ‘permitted development rights’ from a local authority, such as your local council. This ensures you can install a roof lantern without planning difficulties.
How Do I Apply for Building Regulations Approval?
You will require building regulations approval from your local council or a private inspector. Each area’s regulations are different, but focus on the safety of the build and long-term effects, including ventilation and weight.
When applying for building regulations approval, you should include the following details:
1. Roof Lantern Specifications
Provide the dimensions of your roof lantern, including width, length, and height.
2. Roof Lantern Manufacturer
Include the name and contact information of the manufacturer or supplier of your roof lantern.
3. Material Composition
Specify the materials used to construct your roof lantern, such as wood, aluminium, or UPVC.
4. Glazing Details
Indicate the type of glazing used, such as glass or polycarbonate, along with any relevant specifications. Include information on the thickness of the glazing, any insulation properties, and special coatings, like low-e coatings for energy efficiency.
5. Ventilation and Opening Mechanism
Explain how the roof lantern can be opened (if applicable) or ventilated. Provide details about the mechanisms used, whether it’s manual operation, automated controls, or any other features.
6. Thermal Performance
Provide information on the thermal efficiency of your roof lantern. This may include the U-value, energy rating, or any certifications related to energy efficiency.
7. Regulation Compliance
Mention whether your roof lantern meets specific building regulations or certifications. This could include fire rating information or any other relevant standards.
These details will help the inspector assess the suitability and compliance of your roof lantern with the applicable regulations.
What Are the Benefits of Roof Lanterns?
Our roof lanterns have many benefits that will not only increase property value, but provide a healthier, more productive environment for all situations. Roof lanterns are perfect for an office with a lack of daylight or a place to space out and watch the stars at night.
Aesthetic Appeal
Roof lanterns enhance the aesthetics of a space, improving property value and curb appeal. While inspired by Victorian designs, they provide a contemporary and elegant look suitable for a multitude of architectural styles.
Energy and Thermal Efficiency
Our glazing options offer different levels of solar control based on their tint. Roof lanterns can help regulate indoor temperatures, reducing the need for additional heating or cooling, and lowering energy consumption.
Natural Light
Natural light provided by roof lanterns can create a more pleasant living or working environment. Exposure to natural light has been linked to enhanced mood, increased productivity, and better overall wellbeing.
Environmentally Friendly
Roof lanterns can lower greenhouse gas emissions, making the environment a better place for people and nature. Some may incorporate eco-friendly materials and recyclable components, further reducing their environmental impact.
Increased Ventilation
Roof lanterns are designed to allow natural ventilation when desired. This can help regulate indoor air quality and reduce the reliance on mechanical ventilation systems, particularly beneficial for areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
Versatility and Customisation
Our roof lanterns come in a variety of sizes, shapes, glazing, and sometimes motorised features. This allows you to choose a design that suits your specific needs and complements your architectural style.

How Do I Maintain a Roof Lantern?
All windows are prone to natural deterioration from bird mess and bad weather. That’s why we go the extra mile to provide self-cleaning roof lanterns. Instead of droplets, rainwater spreads (like a sheet) and falls down the glass, taking any dirt and grime with it.
Some roof lanterns, on the other hand, require maintenance every three months. This is easily achieved by wiping the exterior with a soft sponge and soapy water, or a specialised glass cleaner if you’re feeling fancy. If you are unable to clean the roof lantern yourself, there are handy professionals waiting for your call instead.
Where Is the Best Place to Put a Roof Lantern?
The best place to install your roof lantern depends on your requirements. They are commonly placed in the centre of a roof above your living room, dining room, or kitchen. Ideally, placing it in a south-facing room that needs more natural light and warmth is the most effective way to use rooflight lanterns.
The placement also depends on the type of glass you purchase. Different tints and glazing will impact the effectiveness of the product. For example, our ambi-clear glass allows the most light, which heats up the room quicker, so this wouldn’t be suitable for a space with large windows or doors. Instead, you should opt for a grey tint to reduce sun glare.
What Size Roof Lantern Should I Choose?
The attractive thing about a roof lantern installation is it can be changed and modified at the request of the customer. At the Rooflight Centre, our wealth of experience allows us to create bespoke projects. The size you need depends on your requirements and how much roof you have available.
We also offer a variety of popular measurements and options, starting at 850mm to 6000mm, followed by width, colour, and glass type.
If you are unsure what specs you need, we encourage you to reach out to us on 0204 579 3522 or complete our form. We will then be able to advise you on the size of installation required as well as pricing.
What Glazing Should I Choose?
At the Rooflight Centre, we have five bespoke glazings to choose from. Each has their own advantages and colour specs, which enable you to make the best decision for your property.
